A simple place to start with air duct care is the grille you can see. Keep furniture, curtains and stored items away from supply vents and return grilles so air has a clear path.
A quick check you can do today
Walk through each room and look for vents hidden behind a sofa, covered by a rug or crowded by boxes. Move those items out of the way. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends keeping air vents unobstructed in its home heating guide.
A dusty grille does not tell the whole story
A return grille can collect ordinary household dust as air passes through it. Gently vacuum accessible surface dust with a soft brush attachment, keeping tools outside the duct opening. Do not reach into ductwork or spray cleaners into the system.
Dust on the grille alone does not mean the ducts need professional cleaning. The EPA recommends duct cleaning when needed rather than on a fixed schedule. Excessive debris, particles blowing from supply registers or evidence of pests warrant a closer professional look. See the EPA’s air duct cleaning guidance.
